Public railway

Britain

The Stockton and Darlington Railway opens in 1825 in northeast England, the first public railway to use steam locomotives for freight and passengers. Earlier wagonways used horses or stationary engines. George Stephenson's locomotives are the machines that make the line a transport system.

The contribution is speed and volume on land. A canal boat is cheap and slow. A train moves coal, ore, people, and mail at a pace that ties a country together. Factories can sit away from the mine because the railway carries the coal. Standard time zones later exist because train schedules demand them.

A railway is not just an engine. It is iron rail, a graded bed, a timetable, and a company. The engine is Watt's idea made mobile. Without the stationary steam engine, nobody builds the locomotive.

1825 is the public opening, not Stephenson's first locomotive, which is earlier.
