The security checklist

A robot is a computer with cameras, microphones and motors. Six checks before you plug one in.

1 · Network isolation

  • Put the robot on its own Wi-Fi network or VLAN, never your main one.
  • Block its access to other devices; allow only the maker's update servers if needed.
  • Change every default password; disable remote access you don't use.

2 · Cameras & data

  • Read where video and maps go: on-device, your cloud, or the maker's cloud.
  • Teleoperated robots (some humanoids) let a remote operator see through the cameras — know when and ask for the policy.
  • Prefer makers with a "local data mode" and a published retention policy.

3 · Firmware & support

  • Check the update cadence and how long the model is supported.
  • Retired platforms (ASIMO, Pepper) may lose cloud services; buy used only with that in mind.
  • Ask for the security contact and vulnerability disclosure policy.

4 · Physical safety

  • Industrial arms need a risk assessment and guarding (ISO 10218); cobots follow ISO/TS 15066 force limits.
  • Mobile robots: ISO 3691-4; personal-care robots: ISO 13482.
  • Legged robots: an exclusion zone and an e-stop within reach during setup.

5 · Rules & procurement

  • Drones: registration, airspace rules and country restrictions on certain brands for government work.
  • Medical robots are regulated devices — hospital IT and compliance teams lead.
  • Export controls can apply to research humanoids.

6 · Total cost

  • Add software subscriptions, payloads, spares, training and service contracts.
  • Robot-as-a-service trades capital for a monthly fee — compare over three years.
  • Ask for the warranty terms in writing.
